CREEC AT THE ‘GREEN THE GHETTO’ SLUM FESTIVAL WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATION HELD IN KIKUBA-MUTWE,  KABALAGALA.

Danny’s Primary School play ground in Kikuba- Mutwe was the venue for the annual ‘Green the Ghetto ‘celebrations to commemorate the world environment day celebrations. CREEC was privileged to participate in the event that was geared towards raising awareness on the woeful hygienic conditions in the slum that have been excalated by the careless disposal of rubbish especially the infamous kaveera (plastic paper bags).

Organized by Slum Festival, a social arts Enterprise for community Empowerment, this annual event not only aimed at harnessing community responsiveness, but also to enlist corporate engagement in summoning sufficient strength to power social change. This is intended to sort the long standing social mindset that has driven the largely unhealthy and unhygienic practices epitomized by the poor disposal of rubbish, a factor that has greatly endangered the eco-system within the slum.

The highlight of the occasion was the CSR exercise of cleaning of the environment that focused on unblocking the kaveera packed trenches within the community. Accompanied by motivated youth, the team took cleaning the slum.

CREEC’S partnership in this event was to seek opportunities of working with Slum Festival to design packages to deliver profitable sustainable and replicable Energy projects that will help transform the social -economic dynamic of the slum community in Kikuba- Mutwe, and hopefully translate into effective environment conservation angels as espoused by Slum Festival. The centre also taught the different ways they could turn their waste into energy.
