CREEC WRAPS UP BIOGAS AWARENESS PROGRAMS IN WESTERN UGANDA

The CREEC on  10th December 2015 wrapped up the awareness creation activities for biogas that have been taking place in western Uganda. In this period, the team met residents of Burunga sub county in Kiruhura district. The CREEC team was very impressed with the enthusiasm and eagerness to learn in this community. The people were very interested in understanding how to utilize biodegradable waste by turning it into a form of energy. Since the majority were farmers, they needed information enough on how biogas works, how to manage and maintain the plants and which digesters may be appropriate for them which information was provided to them. This follows the awareness creation activities on biogas in Mbarara and Kiruhura districts from 1st-4th December 2015.

The main aim of the awareness programs is to “up-scale green energy technologies in Uganda” through providing the necessary knowledge for people to transfer to sustainable forms of energy. CREEC under the UNOPS project has also trained technicians in these particular regions to ensure reliability of the technicians to their customers. Other concerns also included lack of a reliable source of water of which the farmers were advised to construct water harvesters to ensure constant supply of water. These activities are being implemented under the UNOPS project which is being funded by the European Union. We are grateful to the community leaders and financial institutions that enabled us to identify problems and also find solutions to some of the issues addressed.
