Background

The Paris Agreement presents an opportunity for countries to meet their climate goals and keep the world’s global temperature below 1.5⁰C. As it is the case for most developing countries, many African countries including those in the Eastern Africa region are currently seeking measures to implement their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in a bid to meet their climate goals.

Eastern Africa countries envisioned to formulate an Alliance on carbon markets and climate finance.  Supported by the GIZ Global Carbon Market Project in East Africa on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), in cooperation with the UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Center Kampala (RCC Kampala), the East African Alliance on Carbon Markets and Climate Finance was established by the following countries: Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.
