Our Story
In Uganda, over 90% of energy demand is still met with biomass, 6% with fossil fuels, and only about 26% of the population has access to electricity, just 7% in rural areas. The rising dependence on firewood for cooking has outpaced natural regeneration, fueling widespread deforestation and climate stress.
That’s where CREEC comes in.
Founded in 2001 within the Faculty of Engineering at Makerere University, the Centre for Research in Energy and Energy Conservation (CREEC) has grown into a regional leader in sustainable and renewable energy solutions. Today, as an independent not-for-profit, we bring research, innovation, and practical interventions to bridge Uganda’s and East Africa’s energy access gap.
For over two decades, CREEC has:
-
Championed clean energy transitions through cutting-edge projects and pilot initiatives.
-
Partnered with government, donors, private sector, and academia to shape policy, expand access, and unlock investment in Renewable Energy Initiatives.
-
Trained thousands of professionals and youth through capacity-building programs that build technical expertise and drive innovation.
-
Supported businesses and communities with research-driven solutions that enhance affordability, durability, and long-term impact of energy.
