On Friday, 17th October 2025, the Centre for Research in Energy and Energy Conservation (CREEC) hosted the EmpowerHer Energy Innovation Challenge Semi-Finals, a vibrant virtual event that brought together Uganda’s brightest women innovators shaping the future of sustainable energy.
The EmpowerHer Initiative, led by CREEC under the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program, aims to equip young women with the skills, mentorship, and networks they need to lead in the renewable energy space.

Opening the session, Dr. Mary Suzan Abbo, CREEC’s Managing Director, emphasized the importance of creating equal opportunities for women to contribute meaningfully to Uganda’s energy transition. “When women are empowered to innovate, they not only transform their communities but also redefine what sustainable energy solutions can look like,” she shared.
Regina N., Head of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, gave an overview of the EmpowerHer Energy Program, highlighting its role in supporting early-stage innovators through training, coaching, and access to seed funding.
The semi-finals featured dynamic pitch presentations from the top teams, each showcasing groundbreaking ideas — from solar-powered community solutions to women-led clean cooking technologies. The judges panel, composed of energy and entrepreneurship experts, provided valuable feedback and encouragement to the participants, recognizing their creativity and potential for scale.
In her remarks, Ms. Mariana Hoffmann from AVExternos (Impulsouth Project) commended the initiative’s focus on women’s leadership, noting that such platforms are essential for driving inclusive climate action.
The event also included a session from Start Up Africa, which shared pathways for incubation and growth, offering guidance to help participants refine their business models and prepare for the finals.
As the semi-final stage concluded, it was clear that the next generation of women energy leaders is ready to take charge — combining passion, innovation, and purpose to power communities sustainably.
CREEC expresses heartfelt gratitude to all partners, funders, mentors, and judges who continue to make EmpowerHer a catalyst for gender-inclusive innovation in the renewable energy sector.
Stay tuned for the EmpowerHer Finals, where the winning teams will pitch for seed funding and entry into CREEC’s incubation pipeline.
