How CREEC’s Nationwide Repair & Maintenance Training in Electric Cooking is Changing Lives
Across Uganda, the adoption of electric cooking appliances is growing helping families cook cleaner, faster, and safer. But what happens when these appliances break down?
For many, a minor fault means weeks without a working stove, expensive replacements, or a return to charcoal and firewood. With the support of Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) through UKAid and the support of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, CREEC’s Nationwide Repair and Maintenance Training Program has stepped in to ensure that access to modern energy doesn’t stop at purchase of the product.
What Is the Training About?
The hands-on training program that is focused on the repair and maintenance of electric cooking appliances has covered central, east and part of the western region has been covered.
Further more:
- 19 cohorts have successfully completed the training
- 394 technicians have been certified across various districts
These technicians are now equipped with skills in:
- Diagnosing common faults in electric pressure cookers, induction cookers, and hotplates
- Safe and effective repair techniques
- Sourcing and replacing spare parts
- Client service and maintenance best practices
Why This Matters
Electric cooking is only sustainable if appliances last. And for many communities, one broken technology is enough to stall progress.
Through this program, we are:
- Creating jobs and boosting incomes for local technicians
- Increasing trust and adoption of e-cooking solutions
- Reducing appliance waste by extending lifespan
- Empowering youth and women to become solution providers in their communities
“I used to fear repairing electric appliances,” says Rashid, a trainee from Kampala. “But now I can fix them, and people bring me their cookers. I’m making money and helping others.”
Scaling Clean Cooking, Sustainably
This program is more than technical training. It’s part of a larger strategy to build a national ecosystem for clean cooking — one where every electric cooking appliances once purchased are backed by accessible repair services, community-based expertise, and continuous capacity building.
